Chapter Seven

Francesca sat in the passenger seat of Cooper’s Tahoe and listened to herself play Ysaye Sonata No. 8 for the third time since Cooper had picked her up earlier this morning. They were on their way to a small town in central Kentucky Francesca had never heard of before, to teach and perform at a weeklong dulcimer and old-timey music festival. The Barstows as such were not performing, but Kylie and Danny were playing their dulcimers, she was accompanying Cooper on his bowed psaltery, and Cooper’s mother Lexi had agreed to come along and teach some seminars. Ren was along ostensibly for the ride, only Francesca and Kylie knowing he was really along to keep an eye on her. Cooper’s girls were performing and had both their dulcimers and their fiddles in tow. “We’re going to mix it up some,” Brittany told her when she’d asked about the dulcimer cases. “Bridget didn’t want to but Grandma said we should.”

“Grandma has a point,” Francesca pointed out. “You’re more versatile if you play more than one instrument.”

“Then how come all you ever play is the fiddle?” Bridget whined.

“Because nobody’s needed me to play anything else,” Francesca replied patiently. “I’ve offered to play guitar behind your dad’s psaltery, but he likes my fiddling better.”

“I’ll say he does,” Cooper murmured under his breath.

Yes, he did love fiddling around with her.

She felt her face turn red. It turned even redder when Cooper glanced over at her and winked.

They would most certainly be doing some fiddling around this week. Cooper had arranged for them to be in adjoining rooms in the motel, with the girls next door to Kylie and Ren on the next floor up. Ren had not been particularly happy about that. “How in hell am I supposed to be keeping you safe if I’m that far away from you in the hotel?” Ren had asked the day before.

“You’re supposed to not blow my cover, I guess.” Francesca had been unrepentant. She wanted to be with Cooper this week. Six nights in a row in Cooper’s arms. It would be heaven.

Not that she hadn’t spent quite a few nights in his arms already. They had been together a lot in the month since first coming together in Asheville. Her little house had gone from being a hiding place to a love nest for her and Cooper. While she never spent the night with Cooper at his home in front of the girls, she had been their guest on several occasions for an evening of dinner and music. She treasured those evenings with the three of them. She had fun, cooking alongside Cooper and Brittany. She had a blast playing the fiddle with Bridget after supper. She loved sitting down with Cooper and putting together duets, and she loved it even more when Cooper sang to them. She fit in with them. In her mind’s eye, she could see herself as part of their family, living with them and loving them with everything she had in her.
